Philosophy of Education

I have known since 4th grade that I wanted to teach, and now I could not imagine doing anything else. All through junior high and high school,  I taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, as well as helped younger members in the 4-H clubs with their horses, teaching them how to ride and show.  I attended college and continued to give riding lessons and work with local children. My family also took in foster children, and I helped those children when I was home.

I moved to Idaho with a cousin and taught special education at Twin Falls as an aide and “supervised” teacher. I knew at that time that I wanted to teach special ed. children.  I taught 4th grade for two years. I loved what I did and felt that by encouraging children to always do their best, be the best that they can be, and be positive about the assets that each one of them have, kids can be successful.

I moved back to Nebraska because I always wanted to teach in a one-room schoolhouse.  I moved to the Nebraska Sandhills and taught for 9 years in the small schools. I not only met a lot of wonderful families, but also learned to be flexible, learning to work with several grade levels at once, and to make the material individualized to meet the needs of each of the students.

I moved to Fairfield and worked at ESU  #9 while completing my special ed endorsements at Hastings College and UNK. ESU placed me at Silver Lake Schools. I taught here a couple of years before becoming an employee of Silver Lake.

My educational goal is to help children do their best, be positive individuals, and be respectable citizens. I try to help them learn to understand what is difficult for them and how to make learning easier so they can be life long learners.

Personal Information

I was married to Gary Peterson, who passed away suddenly in 1996.  After 8 years of being alone, I met Gunther Hussmann on line on a horse site. We both enjoy the outdoors and horses. Gunther was from Pennsylvania and had lost his wife to cancer in 2000. We were married on June 25, 2005, on horseback in our arena.  I became an instant step-mom!

We have three grown children, nine grandkids, and one great-grand daughter.  We live on an acreage and raise registered paint horses. We have a few chickens for eggs. I am a 4- H project leader for horses in Clay County. Our grandchildren show horses and chickens at the fair each summer.  We also enjoy fishing and hunting, trail riding, and going to the Sandhills to work cattle on relatives’ ranches.
